Summer time scorching

Song of the day: “If I die young” by The Band Perry. Such a nicely morose song. Easy to sing too, so that’s all good.

Car update: (I know, you’re chomping at the bit for that one, aren’t ya?) Nope. We haven’t got the Opel Astra back yet. Turns out the part they had to order (I went there and he showed me the problem. All I can say, Yikes!) hadn’t arrived until very late. This meant that they wouldn’t be able to put it in until Monday (they don’t work on Saturdays) which leaves us without the small car during the weekend too. Considering I’m not planning on going anywhere anyway, who gives a fig?
I sure don’t.

Right. Gawd, the weather today! It’s is a scorcher, thank you very much. This is Spain and with just a day to go until the hottest month (aka August) of the year, we’re going to start it well. The mercury rose into the high nineties today, getting close to a hundred, and what with the mild weather during June and July, it was a bit of an adjustment on all our parts. Seriously, I sweated like a racehorse today. Hah. And, for the first time this year my cabin was hot when I woke up this morning.

A quick dip in the pool helped that, though, so no problem.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Yesterday.
Big brother went to the ITV (MOT), you know, the obligatory check for cars that we have to do twice a year because we have a heavy all terrain vehicle. (Life is soooo unfair.) But anyway, no matter because the car went through it with bells on, so we’re good for another 6 months. Yay.
I always worry when the time is nigh. *sigh*

While big brother was doing that, I helped grandpa with the shelve for tenant’s room, and then, because I’d forgotten, ran down the mountain to water the plants I’d promised to do now that big brother was out. *sigh* It’s a good thing I like doing the watering bit, because the sun was downright scorching. The newly planted vine and bush also needed water, and I harvested about 20 tomatoes since I was out there anyway.

Next there was tenant, of course, who needed a hand getting down to my terrace and then something to drink and her book. By the time I went back to grandpa, big brother had returned and informed me of the good news about the car. The rest of the day was spent writing, cooking an early supper, then going down into the yard to check everything. Some more writing followed that, and then it was time to head out for a scavenge. Seriously, you don’t want to know. Hah.

I was late getting to bed, which wasn’t good because really have been getting way too little sleep these past few weeks. All the dreaming doesn’t help either. So many of them in fact that I can’t even settle on one to write about. Which is a pity, because there were some friggin’ good ones there.

But anyway, I was freaky a...ehm, yeah, the rude word for behind...tired last night and slept straight through to the morning. Boy, I need to get my act together on the whole sleep thing. I was seriously contemplating a nap again this afternoon. Doing just five to six hours a night is simply not doing the trick. Hah.

Where was I? Oh right. Today. Chaos really didn’t like the temperatures today. I mean, I literally saw him twice today, because he kept disappearing into the house where during the day it is relatively cooler. Then, by the time the sun goes down, he’ll start appearing nearby, wanting my full attention. Poor feller; doesn’t like the cold and doesn’t like the warmth.

Knight II, on the other hand, is just bonkers and will head straight for the greenhouse where he’ll stretch out under one of the tables and doze off for the rest of the day. Gada, Labhana and Amri, though, they like to dig out a sandy spot and sleep in that particular area where they will be able to see me move through the veggie yard while still being in the shade.

So today, I started out with a dip (had a headache the size of...I don’t know, Nebraska) laundry and then up to tenants to unload the car and continue with the shelve for tenant’s room. At some point all the sawing and everything was done, and basically grandpa told me to toddle off while he finished up with the easy stuff. Since I had plants to water again, harvests to take in, and a book to finish, I didn’t object and headed down.

Wrote a few pages through the course of the day, though my concentration is shot a lot, today, for some peculiar reason. Had a wonderful lunch of veggie burgers that went down so darn well, I am considering franchising them, or something. Hah.

I only have 3000 words left to finish the book, and I’m starting to fear that it’s not going to be enough. I still have to write the rescue scene, and then the “ are you really okay” dialogue. Oh my gawd, this is so HARD. I hate limits, darn it.

But anyway, after some more writing, and supper, it was going into the yard some more, weeding, watering and all that, and then heading up with grandpa so we could finish that blasted shelf. (It is not just a small little, shelf, in case you’re wondering. Nope. It’s about a foot deep, with a wider section for Tenant’s TV, and about nine feet long.) He had made some slight errors while working on the shelve, so we worked on correcting them before we brought it into tenant’s room to check sizes. It worked out fine, and as soon as grandpa finishes sanding them, we can hang it up.

Though extremely hot, I didn’t mind working up at the storage in the full afternoon sun. The wind cooled the sweat on my skin, so it was vastly doable. Did drink an incredibly big amount of water. At least a couple of gallons, if not double that amount, hah.

But anyway, around ten it started to get darker, so I took a dip in the pool and settled in for some more writing...only to get stuck and deciding to work on the blog instead. It’s better than staring blankly ahead, I guess. Hah.

Gotta go. I need my beauty sleep!

Groceries and writing

Song of the day: “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. Not surprisingly that I have this in my head, eh, considering.

Okay, let’s do it the other way around this time and start backwards.

I just finished todays’ writing session which included another three pages to a project that officially can have another 4,500 words, but no more...well, there are 5000 more but I want to keep those for edits, giving me some additional space. Tonight’s was a fun scene to write, in particular because it was about and argument between two somewhat heated people. Hah.

Before that, (I was starving) there was a quick cooking session involving veggie burgers that went perfectly on sesame buns with cheese, tomato and lettuce. Seriously. Snack food the healthy way is delicious. It took me about fifteen minutes to prepare, but I survived the ordeal hah.

The starving part started around six, when we got home from grocery shopping (I know, aaaargh!) and little sister and I were in the kitchen unloading the endless string of bags that brothers and middle sister kept hauling inside from the overfull car. Jeez, I’m surprised every time that we managed it. Oh, I did find tenant a proper watch this time. Yay.

Groceries were...well, yeah, groceries. Going in and out of stores, loading, unloading, and then some more from one in the afternoon ‘till six, with lots of walking, lots of carrying and sorting through stuff that in the end go to three different households and need to be separated for ten people and 70 something dogs.

But first, prior to groceries, there was the fun bit. Big brother and I went into the yard! Yay. There was some watering to be done, and of course veggies to pluck while big brother set up the drip tubes for the day. Everything was looking good, so we were done well in time before departure.

As every day, the first chore up is always laundry. Considering I was up early (woke about three minutes before the alarm went off, hah) I didn’t even need to rush through the morning rituals to get it all done, and actually had a nice dip in the pool as well. *sigh*

Of course, last night I was late going to bed. Since I was a tad down from getting a “no thanks” from a publisher who I’d sent the experimental “DITGW” novella, I decided some relaxation was in order and watched X-Men: First Class. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t dislike it at all. Hah.

Before that there was more writing, of course. Though it didn’t go at all as well as it did today, where the words just came tumbling out. Deadlines always do me good, for some reason. My mind picks up the pace a bit, I guess.

The writing was a nice change too, since the late afternoon was spent pouring concrete up by the drive sweep where we laid the second half of the path with a three feet wide, three inch thick concrete slab. It looks rather good, even though I was the one who laid it. Big brother was going to, but Sally’s toilet broke, so he had to put in a new mechanism before the night started.

He also finished the watering, which I had already started before going up to take his place. I was just in the middle of it, when grandpa called to let me know that I had to turn off the water because they needed pressure up by the road. Since I had harvested tomatoes already, that wasn’t too bad. I had gotten a wonderful time in the yard from it.

More writing was there, following a very early supper that was downright yummy. I love spaghetti al dente with tomato veggie sauce. Added Nopales to it too (prickly pear cactus pads) so it was a wonderfully successful experiment once more.

Yesterday morning was spent digging the gutter for concrete pouring at the drive sweep. It was friggin’ hot in the full sun, but the gentle breeze from the sea made it more than bearable. Actually liked working with the jackhammer and pick ax, if for no other reason than to exercise the muscles. Hah.

There was breakfast and more laundry, but with that we have reached the beginning of the past couple of days, and the end of todays blog. Yay. I’m hitting the sheets, thank you very much!

Experiments!

Song of the day: “I hope you dance” by LeeAnn Womack, and “Do re me” Julie Andrews in, none other than The Sound of Music. I know, isn’t it exciting? *snort* Oh wait, there was also “Weapon of choice” by Fatboy Slim. Hah.

I’ve been having incredibly weird dreams these past few days. Like this morning, I woke to a dream about both my grandmothers, conspiring to do crazy things (and they never even liked each other, for crying out loud) as if they were friendly with each others. Old cronies. No offense, I have some fond memories of them both, but as human beings they weren’t anything to write home about.

But anyway, in the dream, one was chasing me with a butcher’s knife in her hand, while other locked me in a wall-less elevator about six stories high. Then, if that weren’t enough, seeing as she was acting crazy and in the elevator, she jumped off like a bat out of hell. Suffice it to say that both women ended up in an asylum at the end of my dream, and I was, like, totally relieved waking up to my alarm. Jeez.

Good part: I got around to a work-out last night. Yay. Kick-boxed my a—ehm, butt out (it doesn’t sound the same at all) for about an hour and a half and loved every second of it. Seriously. I needed that. What with the weather so cool this month, the exercise is actually doable...despite the fact that I was practically floating in sweat at the end. But it went well. I had my “Shwung” as they say, and I kicked, punched, kneed and pounded that bag until I could barely catch my breath. Awesome. I was so wonderfully tired at the end that I literally slept within five seconds flat.

Bad part: In the wonderful world of screwy cars. The garage finally figured out the problem with the Opel Astra...and it’s going to cost us more than 400 Euros. Yep. Another hefty mint, and I just might have to sell my kidney, or something. Stupid effing &%€*+@#car. *takes deep breath* I’m okay. I got it out of my system now. Hah.
If all goes as planned, we should be able to pick the car up in about three days...which will be right after grocery shopping (aaargh) and the MOT for the Land Rover. Grrrr.

Spent lots of time with tenant. Two swimming sessions which are so very good for her arm so she can relax it properly. She also loves it, so that is two plusses right there. The walking down bit is a necessary evil for as far as she’s concerned, but at least we fill the time with idle chatter. Hah.

Cooking has involved my lentil/chickpeas patties, which we prepared like hamburger patties, put on buns with lettuce tomatoes and sauce, and devoured for the past couple of days just because they were just to darn good. Seriously, I should franchise them. It was McDonalds quality, but then healthy and vegetarian. Hah.

There was writing (naturally). Only 5000 words to go for me, and then I have to have it finished. Meaning that I’m scared shitless about not being able to wrap the last few scenes up. I hate a word limit, but this too is something I have to learn. If I don’t manage it, we’re going to have to go through the story and see if I can cut any of the scenes.

Funny bit: I fell asleep while writing last night. When I woke up again I had to delete three sentences about Haakon and Matte Marit from Norway (I know, insane, right) which didn’t make any sense, and had absolutely nothing to do with the book, darn it. There was also some serious gibberish through it. Seriously, I might have nurture this particular talent, because imagine what I could get done if I managed to write while asleep. OMG. I could write all night and then just work during the day without trouble. Hah.

Considering Big brother still isn’t ready with the addition to the imperial, I painted the ladder again. It’s starting to look pretty darn solid, and will fit the rest as if it was made for it...what am I saying. It IS made for it. *sigh*

We harvested, of course. Today we’re going to try to cook some prickly pear pads. I am so curious how it will turn out. I’m just going to experiment and see how it works. I’ll let you know how it works out later...or if it was horrible, I won’t. Hah. Other harvests were the normal ones, like tomatoes, onions, peppers and melons.

We watered too, of course. Even though we have the drip tubes in most spots now, there are some things that just need personal attention. I have to admit that yard is looking pretty darn splendid at the moment...Okay. Gotta hurry. What else?

I cleaned my cabin, which was high time. Managed to wreck some spiderwebs in the main house, scrub my bathroom and all that. *sigh*

Time to get to cooking, and then we’re going to shovel shaite from the basin. We still have to clean it of several inches of dried mud, then scrape everything out, clean it properly with water and chemicals, and then paint it...all before the rainy season starts.

More excesses to can

Song of the day: “Que sera sera (what will be will be) by Doris Day. What can I say, the oldies just sometimes come to haunt me.

Yesterday was totally awesome canning thirty pots of tomatoes, pumpkins, green beans, peppers and zucchinis...ehm, yeah...not thirty of each! But all together thirty, duh...for the winter. Sure it took ages, started around noon and didn’t finish until after eight in the evening, but what the hey. It got done, and several of the concoctions are once again experiments. I kinda liked them all, seeing as I made concentrated soups of them. I am definitely keeping several as recipes for the book later on. The way I figure, this winter I’ll pick a pot or two (whichever I’m in the mood for) toss it in a pan and add water until we have a full meal. Easy as pie, as they say. Hah.

Was thoroughly exhausted afterwards, however, and it took me a dip in the pool, supper and some staring-blindly-ahead for several minutes per hour before I recovered enough to start on the day’s writing session. Of course by that time was also thoroughly distracted by the whole debacle going on in Norway. Seriously, that is some far-out shaite, especially in this so called realistic world. *sigh* And here they say that movies are unrealistic when some villain starts on a killing spree. I can’t help but wonder what this fella thought to achieve with his actions. I mean, really, no one’s going to think much of his “message” now that he’s killed dozens of teenagers. I mean, I somehow get his his frustration (read a draft of his manifesto), in a weird way anyway, but this...

Totally book material...though if I had written it, I would have made him smarter. Personally I think, his message, if he had one, would have been far more credible if he had walked into parliament and started mowing down the politicians he blamed for modern day society’s problems. But a youth camp? Not smart! Not smart at all. They’ll dismiss him as a lunatic, and then what? He spends life in prison, foaming at the mouth about stuff he can’t ever possibly change anymore? Ah well, let’s just call the whole thing scary and leave it at that.

Okay, what else. I wrote about two pages last night, despite my distraction and my tiredness. The story is really rapidly developing now, and I really, really have to wrap it up now. I can add another eight thousand words, but that’s it. I need the remaining five for the edit, so that I can at least add extra necessities throughout the story, rather than first having to remove a few thousand words to make room.

So yeah, another trip to the garage is going to be necessary. The cooling liquid is still disappearing, so something is wrong. Aaaargh! So frustrating. Why can’t the friggin’ car just work fine for another year, or so?

Tick season (the tiny black ones) is in full swing, apparently. The little buggers are everywhere, sucking the poor dogs dry, and driving me bonkers because I can’t work on my computer without wasting at least a full hour picking ticks off of them, darn it. There are a few that are really considered a delicacy by the buggers.

This morning, seeing as caregiver was once again at her other job (for six hours this time) I spent a lot of time with tenant. First I helped her change, after which she waited in the kitchen for a bit while I prepared lentils/chickpeas patties for lunch. Then we walked down to my terrace where she sat reading in the shade while grandpa and I worked on sanding the boards of my future living room floor. They’re going to be beautiful, thank you very much, and it was a nice occupation early in the day.

Afterwards tenant and I both took a dip in the pool, and then headed on down to the basin terrace where we started on supper. The patties worked out just fine, and the vegetable mix to go with them...yummy. Seriously, is there anything healthier than fresh veggies in a cream-tomato sauce?

Well, I would like to do a bit of writing still, before the day is through, and after that...well, I just might hit the sack early today. Seriously, I’ve been getting way too little sleep again this week. *sigh*
