Yard work

Song of the day: “Dr. Jones” by Aqua. Talk about ditzy song that has a way too catchy tune when it concerns my head. Seriously, it sounds like a broken record in there.

Okay, let’s get down to business fast. I’ve got loads of stuff to do still, not to mention an edit and chats and…well, I have a very important appointment with my bed within five hours, so, no dawdling.

Yesterday: I did finally get a full night’s sleep (doing a happy dance), regretfully I was friggin’ sore all over the place because both Knight II and Chaos decided that it was a good idea to share the head end of the bed while I was asleep, so by the time I noticed I was sleeping diagonally on the bed, with my feet sticking by ten inches or so. *sigh* Seriously, it took me five minutes of stretches just to be able to move. Yikes.

After the usual morning chores and such, the workout of the day started right after breakfast in the shape of hauling wheelbarrows of rocks down the mountain. Fascinating stuff, hauling rocks down a mountain, if you must know. You’re knees truly enjoy the endeavor, and so to your shoulders and spine. Hah. Still, no matter, the wheelbarrows went all the way to the lowest gate, where I lost my grip for a moment, having the rocks (80 pounds a pop, I would think, meaning three per wheelbarrow) all tumble down the small stairs. Not that it mattered, that was the end of the line anyway, since from there on out we had to carry them down three flights of stairs to the LOWEST part of the yard, where we’re creating a few new terraces. I know, that’s a really smart idea, just not the handiest. Hah.

But anyway, we got a big batch down where we needed them, and created one terrace by digging into the dirt until there was a semblance of leveled soil. While big brother and I worked on that, grandpa dug holes for the fruit trees. Three in fact, which were nice and big allowing for plenty of compost once we planted them (today).

Several dogs “jumped” the fence, so we made sure to make a mental note that we had to check the fences come morning, not allowing the more fierce ones of the bunch in the veggie lot. Tadaika, who managed to get out twice, looked most disappointed, blinking her big fat lashes at us whenever we went through the gates. She totally didn’t understand why she couldn’t go out and play with the horses. (The horses of the neighbor are out a lot again.)

There was some cloudiness during the day yesterday, but still a pleasant day to spend in the yard. Once we called the terrace building to a halt, and fifteen more lettuces were planted in the onion field, we headed for the basin level and planted 22 grape sticks in pots, along with seventeen more strawberry plants which I’d thrown into a bucket the day before. We’ll have to see how many of them will survive the ordeal, eh?

Yard stuff done, it was already late for supper, which consisted of a salad along with the Mac&cheese big brother made. Yummy, sure, but also heavy of the gut since immediately after we had to head out for an appointment in town.

I would like to say that this was something exciting to tell about, but I’m afraid that it was just boring stuff that I won’t bother you with. Instead we’ll slip right on through to me catching up on my messages once we got home, and then the edit, which went fast, and well enough, considering neither big brother nor I had much fuel left by then.

So let’s skip to this morning, which came way too early for my liking, but then, what else is new, right?
There were the chores, of course, followed by once again cleaning the ears of poor Njanna and Carla, who didn’t appreciate it at all, but suffered through the ordeal without complaint. I hate doing it to them, but really, those infections are bad. If only Rammi, Bambi, or Huckabee would clean them, like they do with a lot of the other dogs, but regretfully that is not the case with these poor babies. Instead they have to suffer through the cleaning session that literally drives Carla up the wall.

That done, it was time for breakfast and making patty dough of lentils. Since I was busy anyway, I decided to experiment with a gluten free variety, because Sally is at the moment on a diet and is having the hardest time functioning without bread. I’m curious as to what she thinks of the chickpea concoction. Personally, I didn’t like the smell, but I’ve found that with the patties that says very little.

Once done with preparing the patties, and unloading the car, it was time to get another load of rocks down the mountain before getting started on watering the veggies. By the time I was done with that, big brother and grandpa were down as well, and after grandpa spent some time mirroring fruit trees, he and big brother walked the fence in search of the spot where Tadaika and some of the others went out yesterday. They found a massive gap underneath the reed patches, so grandpa did a patch job and promised he’d add some fortifications tomorrow.

Though the plan was to work on the new terraces again, we opted to harvest instead, and then start on planting some of the fruit trees. A rather wonderful occupation, if you must know. There was sunshine aplenty (I got sunburned, thank you very much) and I dug, chopped and hauled, putting in two apple trees, one cherry, and two nectarines. Loads of fertilizers for the lot of them, along with water from the basin, which is rather pungent at the moment. Hah.

After the first four trees, only of which placed in a spot we dug out halfway in a terrace, we went up to have supper of fresh beats with cheese and fried rice. Delicious…and added to that we prepared mashed potatoes with kale, the first of which tenant cut for us while we went back into the yard to plant our first batch of potatoes this year. These are home grown, so they should be pretty ecological by now. Hah.
While big brother was making the gutters, I put in the second nectarine, which has an honorary spot beside the stairs going down to the big terrace.

And, well, that’s it for today. Once twilight fell, I had to rub my shoulders and neck in aloe vera, which should take care of the worst problems. Such a nuisance, sunburn, eh? Ah well, I’ve survived it before and will undoubtedly survive it again. Hah.

Birthday pie!!!

Song of the day: “Perhaps perhaps perhaps” by Doris Day. Also had several other songs tumbling around in this messy brain of mine, but let’s face it, for as far as my brain is concerned, yesterday might as well be ten years ago. *sigh*

But no matter, it’s been a busy couple of days and since I thought to take my diary out with me, I can just check everything off while I write this.

First off, there is of course, always the edit. I know this is starting to get boring, but there you have it, ‘tis an innate part of my life and I wouldn’t change that part of it for anything. Admittedly big brother and I get into quite fierce debates about this one, and for the life of me I can’t imagine why this is the case. Sure, we had the same problem with Saving Nina, but with AIL we had hardly any trouble. Perhaps it has to do with the plot, more than anything.

Anyway, let’s see what I can write about yesterday. I spent a lot of time with tenant again, seeing as caregiver was at her other job, but tenant was in good spirits, so we got to chat and sing as we made our way down the mountain to the basin terrace. There she spent the majority of the early afternoon, reading, cutting veggies, and napping, as she is prone to do a lot this time of year.

During breakfast I made dough for pie, seeing as mom’s birthday is today, hah. It meant making dough in the morning, peeling apples around two in the morning and putting the dough in the pans, and preparing everything for the morning. They went into the small oven this morning, and right now, tenant and I are waiting for cousin Ed to whip up some cream as bring us a piece. Yay. I love apple pie! In particular when there are walnuts, almonds, raisins, coconut shavings and some apricot jelly in it. Gawd, I just had supper, and already my mouth is watering again, darn it.

As appears to become the habit at the moment, we’re peeling our supper potatoes during breakfast these days, or else we just don’t have enough time to get it all done. But we had our very first Filderkraut cabbage yesterday (sweeter than normal white cabbage) together with freshly harvested broccoli and the first try at using our own cheese. I was a tad disappointed (I’m really not much of a fan of soft cheeses) but everyone else like it, so it doesn’t really matter.

As for the majority of activities both yesterday and today was work in the yard. We’re clearing a new, wild section of the garden, which we plan to cultivate into a produce section. It’s taking some effort, in particular since we used to dump garden waste in that particular spot in the past. The entire incline is filled with old bougainvillea branches, dead Broom plants, and more Morning Glory vines than anyone ever should be require to battle. Hah. It is shaping up nicely, actually, and we’re revealing quite a bit of good soil down there. Once we get some serious rocks hauled down there, to create some terraces, it should do fine for veggies.

Did have to take out at least fifty strawberry plants for it. They’re on the terrace we’re expanding, and there’s at least double that amount of plants still standing there. We’re going to have so many strawberries at some point…if they all survive that is.

In the afternoon we headed out to a plant nursery and got our order of fruit trees. It took two years of saving, but now we are about to ad seven more citrus trees to our collection of fruit trees, two cherry trees, two nectarines, one peach, and three apples. Sure, they’re not in place yet, but we’ll get them in place before summer. Hah.

This morning we had to treat both Njanna’s and Carla’s ears. Both have a rather fierce infection going there, so for the next few weeks, we’re going to try to clean the mess several times a week in the hopes of battling the problem. Poor darlings hated it, but we popped them both a pain pill and hardened our hearts. It had to be done.

Gawd, eating pie now. Yummy! And blasted dogs also like it. “Get away, this is mine!!!” Ya gotta be fast round these parts. “Get. Off. The. Table, Dax!”

Both today and yesterday involved watering the plants, of course. It takes about an hour, and since I’d already opened up and watered the greenhouse and seedbed, (popped on down between laundry and breakfast) I could start immediately after getting tenant settled. In the meantime big brother and grandpa already continued with clearing the terrace.

I still need to varnish my doorway between my cabins. Just didn’t have the time today, darn it. Ah well, some other day.

Okay, that’s it for today. I still need to head out to pick up a donation, so time’s a bit short. Gotta go.

A shorty

Song of the day: “Don’t marry her” by The Beautiful South. The not-so-clean version. Hah.

I’m drawing some terrible blanks here. I hate it when that happens. I’m sure I was pretty darn busy the past couple of days but my thoughts keep flitting in and out of cognitive memories. *sigh*

Well, I do remember lots of gardening. Yep. There was that, and for the next week or so there will be more of that for sure. For the most part my activities involved watering of the fields, along with harvesting broccoli, chickweed, kale and a nice batch of tomatoes from the greenhouse. Tomatoes are starting to do extremely well now, thankfully. Same goes for the chard inside the greenhouse for that matter.

Planted a field of onions, three kinds in fact, and did most of it barefoot, if you must know. Of late I’ve been experiencing some serious discomfort from those insoles. Feels like some sort of cramp at the bottom of my foot, so I’m trying to wear them less at the moment. The bare feet is really pleasant. Nothing is quite a stimulating for the body as feeling pricks and stings to the bottom of the feet while navigating through a wild garden. My feet are far less tired at the end of the day because of it.

As to the garden work in the future; either tomorrow or the day after, we’re going to start on expanding the veggie garden. Not only a couple of fields where now the Morning Glory rages rampant over the Common Broom, old debris from the yard itself and rotting reed stems. It won’t be fun, but it should be worth the effort once we get it all cleared away.

Plans are to get more fruit trees in the near future, so we need to prepare for that as well. It won’t be cheap, but we do need to invest in the future in that regard. What with the ever increasing prices, it will be well worth it.

Edits of course. Always edits…and some planning for the next book, which is a fun way to keep the brain nimble. Got a good plot start going so far. The characters are shaping up, the baseline is running, and while working on it, individual scenes are gradually coming into existence. Gotta love writing. Despite me trying to keep it superficial because if I don’t editing is going to be pure hell. Nothing is worse than having to work on an older book while the new one is haunting you.

There was a cooking session or two, but nothing massively interesting. If food’s just food, then there really isn’t much to tell about it, is there?

Dog-wise, there’s going to be some changes. Rather than feeding them in the afternoon we’re going to try to feed them in the morning. We wanna check if that would bring up their energy levels, and if it will make the old timers function better.
Though the new pain pills appear to work well enough, just barely, Gada is not doing as well as I would like her to be. She appears less happy, and getting up is getting to be harder every day. Poor sweetie. I don’t see it improving, and that is the worst thing of all.

I should have painted the passage between my cabins, but I was busy with tenant, both this morning and yesterday, meaning that it got put in the backseat, so to speak. Maybe I’ll manage to squeeze it in tomorrow…unlikely, what with the garden plans, but a girl can hope, right?

This is going to have to be it for today. I’m running behind, and despite the fact that I already did some edits earlier today, I would like to get another page or two done tonight.
Oh wow, basically only one page in the blog today. Success at last. Hah

Distracted much?

Song of the day: “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. Had it before, will have it again, I’m sure. Also “Why not me” by Enrique, which makes for an interesting combination, if you ask me. Hah.

I had planned on doing this rant about indie publishing and all that jazz, but then, by the time the day drew to an end the mood faded, so I will once again tell about the usual stuff. You know, life in general.

Let’s start this the right way and begin with yesterday to then work our way to today. I made a list, so it shouldn’t be too hard.
The day started cloudy, and I was late so I had to skip the workout (same will count for the next few days. Too much to do, darn it) and start directly on the chores. Due to the clouds we didn’t need to go into the yard, so after breakfast big brother and I could immediately start on gathering materials for my cabin. Ever since we built the cabin, the connection between the two rooms was make-due, and has been gradually falling apart. We took out the old panels, they were all skewed and the nails coming loose. And then, working with real wood that matches the rest of the cabin, we put in the new paneling. It is gorgeous. Really. It’s as if the doorway is twice as big, even though it isn’t. Yay. It took several hours, lots of measuring and fitting, but it did work and…well, I love it! I woke up and lay there staring at the wonderfully wide passage. *sigh*

Because we were so busy, Cousin Ed opened up the seedbed for us. And later in the day Dani came to visit. She’s moving house, so she won’t be able to come over as often as she used to. Pity. Always sad to have friends move away.

Tenant appears to have decided to turn a new leaf, and is determined to keep busy. Yesterday she spent several hours sewing on the embroidery window I made for her. She fixed her own pajamas and a blouse of mine, and everything, and seemed proud as a fiddle about that…as she should. Added to that she used the home trainer bicycle again, and cut veggies for our joined supper, so she was pretty darn busy. I think it’s good for her, to find a purpose for herself.

I was right back on track too, keeping busy myself when I ended up writing a three page rant on the Amazon for a, which is never smart, regardless that most folks were incredibly sweet about it. I hate confrontations about that, in particular since it all started on a discussion thread one of the folks from my regular discussions had opened. It took me a little by surprise, you see, and then one thing led to another, and I remembered how the last time open season was announced on the indie authors, and I think I hurt this person’s feelings, which was not my intention at all. *sigh* That’s what happens when you let your imagination run off with you, I guess. It creates friction. And though friction on itself is not a bad thing (life is all about friction), I do dislike hurting other people’s feelings. But I felt compelled to do so. Didn’t feel like I had a choice in fact, because this is how it all started the last time. One voice, rather innocently started, and before you knew it, all authors were the bad guys. Ah well, no matter. What’s done is done.

Due to the discussion that ensued after my rant, I was incredibly late getting to bed, and I was so wired from it, that it took me at least an hour falling asleep, making me run behind again, today. (Darn it.)

Started the day with the normal chores, yes, the laundry, what else? And then got to work on hanging the new shelving mom asked for in the kitchen. It took some time, but it’s in place and looking well enough.

Tenant, still determined to do more during the day, walked all the way down to the basin terrace (1st time this year, because the weather was splendid) where she kept us company while we worked in the greenhouse and yard. There were fields to water, plants to check for caterpillar eggs, and caterpillars to kill after I dug them out of three cabbages. Little buggers. They really don’t get it yet. Those plant are OUR food, darn it.

Since the weather was so splendid, and tenant was keeping us company, cousin Ed and I unloaded all the crates with glass pots from the small storage room by the basin and sorted through my collection of canning pots. Quite a lot, but not so many that I can be selective when the time comes to can again. I won’t be short pots either, though. Thankfully. Otherwise I would have to have to buy new pots first again.

That done, I spent some time in the greenhouse, sowing more herbs and seeing if there were more cauliflower seedlings to transplant (nope) before I headed up and together with big brother put the new threshold in the small passage between my two cabins. It’s beautiful dark hardwood, matching my floor, of course.

That done, there were veggie burgers for a very late lunch. Gawd, I was starving. They went down real well with the mayo yogurt sauce I made for them. *sigh* I should have had more. I’m starving again.
I wasn’t feeling too well, for some peculiar reason, so I took a short nap because I knew I had to go out later, to pick up a donation once again. This time a little earlier than usual, because the donating party were elderly and preferred nine in the evening. So we got back around ten, the car half full and went down to get to work.

The dogs weren't happy with our absence. In fact, mom had to call most of them into the house to keep them from howling during the hours we were out. Silly dogs. *sigh*

Didn’t get any edits done today…luckily yesterday we did do three pages at least…and I got distracted on the fora once more, so we’ll just have to do the double amount tomorrow. Gawd, I get tired just thinking of it.

Which brings us to now, with me yawning my head off and more than ready to call it a day…oh, did I tell you about my dream last night? No? Well, remind me to do so, someday soon. Hah.
