Some near disasters

Song of the day: “Wide awake” by…hold your breath, Katy Perry. Seriously, what’s it with my head having earworms of singers I don’t even like all that much. Luckily the song is not a bad one.

Well, I have to keep this short because if all goes well I have to go up to load up the car with Cousin Ed so we can leave for the market in Malaga. If we can manage to get there (the Land Rover is giving us fits) it is going to be an interesting evening, because the temps are, at this very moment 100 +. Yep. Every bit of movement causes a burst of sweat to break out, so slow movements are key for the day……

Okay, change in plans. Didn’t manage to write yesterday’s blog. By the time I started writing, big brother and mom came home from a quick trip into town that turned out to be longer than expected, because basically they couldn’t get the car up the mountain. Shaite. And that while cousin Ed and I still had to load up for the market. Grrr.

So anyway, I called the mechanic, and he told me that the injector must have gotten worse, and that we’ll just have to do the repair sooner than planned, darn it. Still, I had a job to do, so we loaded up the car regardless and set out toward Marbella, through the back road, because I didn’t want to risk the beach road with all its traffic. We made it, just barely, going as fast as possible at what was mostly a downward slope. Gained enough speed at those to get up the two inclines that we encountered (thank gawd I know that road well) and then, in the sweltering heat of at least 100 degrees, we drove down toward Marbella where the temps dropped a solid eight degrees. It was wonderful, it was bliss, and gradually the breeze dried the mm thick sheen of sweat on my skin. Yay!

We arrived only fifteen minutes late, and started setting up (sweating all over again) as planned. Had to do some serious footwork with the car in order to get it up to the car-park afterward, but managed. Everything was set up about an hour later, and the patrons started to arrive.

The photographer was there again, and he did ask to take a picture again (don’t worry, I’m pretty sure he does that with practically anyone, hah) but I still wasn’t comfortable enough. There was this moment where I was leaning against this old fashioned lantern, and suddenly I saw him at a distance lining up a photograph. Silly but my first instinct was to push away from the lantern and move out of the shot. He later assured me he wouldn’t take a picture unless I agreed with it, so I’m going to stop worrying. Heck there actually might be a day that I won’t tense up when the guy comes walking past. Hah.

I did settle on a nice “market outfit” yesterday. I had on a warm brown peasant skirt with white cotton lace at the bottom, topped by a sleeveless white top, warm brown floppy hat, and dangly earrings. I mean seriously, I don’t get all that much opportunities to dress remotely nice, so I am definitely using these days to have some “outfit” fun. Heck, my white sneakers underneath (definitely need my insoles when I’m on my feet for that amount of time) didn’t even detract from the image. The only downside was that I was wearing a turquoise bikini top under the white, which shone through. I thought it clashed with the brown, but what the heck, it’s a beach joint. Hah.

Had a few chats, recognized a few face from last week. Not the nice Hungarian women, guess they didn’t find it worth it. Neither was the unemployed Spanish woman, which was a pity. On the other hand, there was this nice Spanish lady who made jewelry, across from us, and beside her two young women with piles of wonderful second hand clothes. Hah. As a plus, unlike the last time, we got two big spotlights set specifically on our merchandise, so it looked splendid. No spectacular sales, but we made expenses at least. Yay.

As to the experiment I’ve been working on the past week (did some tie dye clothes) there was quite a bit of interest, and I even sold one shirt. It was the best one too, it had a circle in the center that went all the way through, back to front, and gawd, if it had been my size, I’d have kept it myself. Hah.

Now, the way back…it was fascinating. Since I have gotten a bit used to the present problem of the Land Rover, I thought it better I drive back as well. Managed to get up the incline (Funny Beach is off the highway with a hair pin road) with little trouble, but I did need to shift to low gear at the end, because my poor baby just refused to get up there. Annoyed some of the other sellers, but what the heck. Then, at the ramp of the highway, it turned out that it was the busiest moment of the day, with traffic zooming past at top speed. Oh my gawd, waited a solid three minutes before there was a gap big enough that I dared risking to get on, and when I did, I barely managed to gather enough speed to get on. There were two cars, coming up behind me fast, and they honked furiously while storming past. Jeez. Friggin’ scary!

Drove home having serious dialogue with the car, keeping her going at a steady clip, the rev just a bit over the top to keep her pulling, and just keeping our fingers crossed that there would be no traffic jams. There weren’t and after about five miles the highway cleared of traffic, giving us a clear road all the way to the mountain. That’s when the fun started. Managed about one third of the way in two, then had to shift back to one, and came to a standstill at the steepest part, right under the village. Gawd. I had to put the car into low gear, and even then I could only shift to two to keep her moving. Which was even scarier than the highway, because a car came up behind us, going a solid fifty and braking less than a yard behind our butt. Jeez! Made it up the mountain going 4 mph at most, and when we did, I pulled over for a deep breath and to put it back into normal gear. Rather than go over the village, we went through (no steep inclines there) and made it home (slowly) but without incident.

Big brother was waiting for us with food, and after a few minutes on the internet to unwind, it was time for bed at the three in the morning. It was an adventure, I’ll say that much.

As for the day and stuff before the market incidents…
The day before yesterday really was a quiet day, with writing, a trip to town to drop of the Opel so the radiator could be flushed (luckily the Opel is now done, meaning that we can drop the Land Rover off without lacking transportation) and then down to the basin terrace to write. Not a lot of pages (four and a half at most) but a good scene nonetheless. The characters finally got chatty, which was good since it’s two old girlfriends who know each other well. And boy were they chatty, they were still talking yesterday when, after ironing some clothes, I finally got to a couple of hours of writing (managed another three pages then).

No cooking in the past couple of days, which is stupid. With my deficiencies I really should skip on hot meals with lotsa veggies, but seriously, who’s got the time? I sure don’t.

There were the normal chores. The laundry, preparing and feeding dog food. Harvesting, watering, and of course weeding. Hah. There were dogs to pet (aka looking for ticks), dogs to soothe (Fortuyn and Groovy got into a fight, leaving the first with a nice cut in his neck) and more looking for ticks. If all goes as planned, we’re doing a tick bath again today, because it’s just getting to be ridiculous again. The other day I got eight of those big suckers between Arthur’s toes, for crying out loud. And Adma. We took like thirty small ticks OUT of her ears.

Well, I better get to it know, still lots to do before the day is through. Luckily it is not nearly as warm today as it was yesterday. In fact, right now it is actually quite pleasant. I will be needing to head into town later on (dropping off the Land Rover and all) but other than that, I’m not planning much of anything today, other than writing, that is. Gotta go.

Fair

Song of the day: “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. I know, right. Who’d have thought that I’d ever have a Bruno Mars song in my head, but there you have it. Nice song, though *shrugs* can’t change that fact.

Yesterday I didn’t sleep all that well, partly because grandpa needed something, about one hour after I went to bed, meaning that I was just about to drop off into deep sleep when I was jerked out. *sigh* No biggie, but, then of course my mosquito repellant ran out, and they were all through my bedroom (stupid, stupid, stupid me for leaving the doors open and the lights on) keeping me awake another two hours before I remembered having a spare re-filler lying about in my sitting room. Yay. Once I plugged that in, sleep fell over me within fifteen minutes. It wasn’t easy waking up in the morning, so since I didn’t have anything pressing to do yesterday, I decided to steal another 30 minutes rather than getting up my usual time. Gawd, that was nice.

Went down for laundry in the end, and had to skip the morning dip in the pool (which is a pain. Once you’re used to that, you don’t really wake up until you’ve had the coolness all over) because we’d drained it into the basin so we could clean it.

Fed the dogs, of course, and for a moment I considered calling the newspapers because--hold your breath--Knight II ate his whole bowl. I kid you not. Mr Anorexic ate every last kernel and was proud as a fiddle. Must have been the pots of herring we threw (donation) through the food. Who’d have thought that a dog of mine would like fish? I sure didn’t. Hah.

Went down to start on the day’s writing session and actually managed a nice five pages for the book. It was all very exciting, too. Had a fight to describe, danger and humor combined, which makes it fun to write, of course. Practically finished the scene, which is a pity because that means I have to think of a new one. *snort*

Made a potato veggie salad for supper, so that was a hasty but tasty affair on the most part. Tenant spent the majority of the day up in the old horse paddock. She had said she wanted to come down to join us in the morning, but then, when it was time to go down, changed her mind.
A pity, but her choice, of course.

Only went out for a short while, and that was to pay the vet. Almost had a heart attack when I saw the bill we had to pay…no pressure on their side, we can take our time, but, seriously! I just might need to sell my liver. Oh My Gawd *fans herself* I’m gonna stop thinking about it now, we paid two thirds so the rest we won’t need to worry about for at least another month.

Went into the yard. There was some harvesting to do, along with weeds to yank (when is there ever not weed to yank, for that matter) and by then the end of the day rapidly approached with the preparations for the next dog food.

Did help cousin Ed sort through clothes for Thursday’s market. We have a plan you see, and we’re going to see what will come of it. It has to do with second hand clothes and art. Let’s just say once we’re done with those clothes you won’t recognize them. Hah. Then, we’ll see what folks think.

Did some crunches in the evening, along with some reps just because I could. Seriously, it felt good.
Later in the evening, round the time I was getting ready for bed, Knight II and Jelly were making their usual racket facing off on my porch, which ended up in a near disaster since Knight II got so excited that he forgot that Dax is his best buddy and grabbed him around the chest, only to toss him off the porch. Gawd. Poor Daxie was shaking like mad.
Carried him inside, ordered Knight inside too and had him lie down on the bed while I told him how bad a boy he was. The most amazing thing happened. One second Dax was shaking, the next he saw Knight lie flat on his side, looking oddly sorry, and perked right up. He jumped about a little, played with Knight a little, and then went off in a dash. Strange. But anyway, I was vastly relieved. It could have been a disaster, since Dax is about the size of Knight’s head.

Which brings us to today. Had to get up early to drive the car to Malaga for the MOT. Grandpa had kindly already prepared dog food, so all we had to do was feed them and head out. Actually there without a hitch for a change, and arrived there on the dot of our appointment. No troubles, we were almost immediately called to line six and before you know it we were going through the hangar where stuff gets tested by the score. Passed without a hassle (much to our mechanic’s surprise, but much to our relief, since it gives us a little time for the major repair) and got our sticker for the next six month. Yay!

We made a small detour to the big Chinese supermarket for chili sauce, and then headed back to town to go past the computer repair dude. We got big brother’s computer back, the other day, did I mention that yet? Well, we did and whatever the dude did and said he failed at, big brother was able to erase everything on the computer and start from scratch…which seems to have fixed the problem. Double Yay! We figured that, since something the repair dude did was right, and since he cleaned it, fixed the frame of the laptop so that it closes again, we thought it fair that we at least paid the minimum (can’t afford much more, you understand) for his efforts, despite the wave-off without having to pay the other day. Fair is fair, and I would want to be treated that way if something I did turned out to be good. Can’t expect others to treat you fairly if you don’t do the same yourself, right?
Besides, this is a small company, not one of those big impersonal chain stores.
But anyway, when I came in, the guy behind the reception desk was a little surprised I wanted to pay regardless, but said, “if you want to pay, then sure, I won’t stop you.” Hah. I did ask if the money would end up with the repair dude, and he said it would, so, *phew*

I can’t help but wonder about his surprise, though. Why is it so unusual to do that? I don’t expect free rides in this world, and figure that fairness is something that should be important to everyone. Still, from the surprised look on his face he thought it somewhat weird…but then, I’m weird by nature, might as well be honest about it. Hah.

That done, we headed for the garage to talk with our mechanic. He explained that the back wheel was not a big problem and that all it took was tightening some bolts. The oil in the transmission box was only a little on the low side, so nothing big there, and they didn’t even charge us for it. Good thing too, since the Opel is going haywire again and since we’ll need to bring the Land Rover in for a major overhaul of the injectors in September, because right now the Spanish garages will charge an arm and a leg, while taking forever. (They have to hire out for recalibration of the injectors, or some such) August is not a good time in Spain. Everything dwindles down to near zero because of the “heat”. Insane. In particular in this economy.
But anyway, what with all the splendid service at the shop, I’m totally going to make a pie for them. Hah.

We headed home afterward, arrived at around two thirty, and settling by the basin no later than three. Of course my focus was shot, so I didn’t manage more than just a few paragraphs today, tonight included because I had to blog, duh.

So instead, cousin Ed and I got to work on the clothes for the market, which didn’t go bad at all. Got some interesting combinations going in the two hours that followed. Today, tenant did join us down there. In fact, she was already there when we got home and had cut most of the veggies for supper. Made a veggie potato dish in the grill/oven and it worked out splendidly. Only a little was left afterward in fact.

That done, it was down into the yard to harvest dog food for the day while big brother finished up watering the lot. We are slowly cutting back on the patches down there, more so to conserve water than anything else, so in a little while there will be very little watering to do.

While big brother cut veggies, I laid the fire for it, took a dip in the pool because I was so sticky, and then settled down to add the third paragraph to the book, prior to started on today’s blog…which brings us to the end of today. Bed time is just around the corner, and I, for one, am more than happy to call it.

Getting back the groove...a little

Song of the day: “Cooler than me” by Mike Posner. Such a funny song, only problem is that it often gets stuck in my head which means that the chorus keeps tumbling round and round through my head.

Well, I just got back from a jog, and it went okay, I guess. It’s been a while, what with everything going on, so it really was rather necessary to head on out there and seriously move for a bit. Already did a bit of rowing before it, and some crushes, but that’s about the extent of my exercise until tonight’s jog. Hah.

So what happened yesterday? Not all that much, thankfully. It was actually a nice quiet day for as far as I was concerned. Stole and extra 45 minutes of sleep in the morning, hah, and then went down for my habitual dip in the pool. Went through the morning chores without a hitch and then headed down for basin terrace to write.

Difficult to get back into the groove after several days of inactivity (writing-wise) so it didn’t go splendid, but I did manage to bang out four pages in a new scene. At the moment (still in that scene, by the way) my heroes are facing deadly danger. *sigh* The things an author does to his/her characters, eh? Breakfast was during the writing bit, but it was a distracted affair, warranting some snacks later on.

Went to the yard and yanked weeds while watering the veggies. Also had to bind some of our tomato plants. They’ve been growing well finally, so they were going all over the place. Also, the morning glory is heading everywhere, I took out at least three hundred feet of the darn vines.

The dogs were ecstatic with our being home, I tell ya. They were more around our feet than ever, and several came begging for a de-ticking. Gawd, we’ve been busy emptying them for days now. They’re all over them. I think that over the past two days we’ve taking off at least five hundred of the darn parasites. We are SO going to do another bath dip against the carpy things.

That done it was up to the terrace in front of my house to cut the next day’s dog food. Loads of cabbage, peppers, beet peels, which came from our own meal of beets with rice, leek and onions. That was absolutely nice, by the way. I love beets like that.

Tried some more writing later in the evening, but by then I was too tired and actually managed to be in bed ten past one in the morning, which was good of me (applause, hah) and hardly bolstered me for today. Strangely enough I was still tired this morning. Gotta improve my food intake right now, exhaustion with me often indicates that I’m not getting enough nutrients in. I managed four small meals so far, so with a little luck I will manage a quick snack in a little while loaded with proteins, if I can manage it.

This morning. Well, there were the usual morning chores, of course, followed by a search through my office for paper tenant can use to write letters to her old buddies. I got asked to find some three days ago already, but I kept forgetting. Found it, along with a sturdy folder, she can also use as a writing surface. Big brother took that time to look through the storage of dog food behind my cabin, organizing some in the mess that was there.

Next it was down to the basin terrace, eat breakfast and get to writing. Of course it was already after noon by then, but what the heck. In the hours that passed I added another five pages to the book (had a better groove today at least) cooked supper and then, just because I couldn’t keep my eyes open I did a thirty minute nap. Made all the difference, and allowed me to head into the yard and help big brother watering the plants and yanking weeds.

Did some writing for the blog, jotted down notes, ya know, and then went out for the little jog that I so very much needed. Not the best jog ever, but there was movement and that’s all that counts.

Discovered that I won’t be needing to go out tomorrow, by the way. Turns out my memory tricked me about the MOT. Instead we’ll have to go on Tuesday. Yay, right. At least tomorrow won’t be busy.

Well, I’m going to watch a movie, so this is it for today.
