Groceries done for now.

Song of the day: All sorts of Sound of Music songs, actually. Tenant watched the movie the other day, so the friggin’ songs have been going through my head constantly. Aaargh.

Which reminds me, yesterday was grocery shopping day and it was once again a doozy, thank you very much. Seriously, we did it in a speedy fashion, but I was absolutely finished by the time I finally sat down and tried to focus on writing.

I made a brave effort until midnight, editing about six pages, considering writing was downright impossible (what with my brain being mud and everything) and then gave up to head for bed early. Slept a solid eight hours! I know, I was stunned too, but there you have it. I woke at nine thinking I could do another forty minutes, but discovered I couldn’t and got up to face the day anew.

Am I getting ahead of myself? Did I forget something vital to tell about yesterday? I don’t think so. Nope, yesterday was just your average grocery shopping hell, so let’s leave it at that, shall we?

Today started with a splendidly sunny morning and I rushed through the morning chores such as laundry so I could head out into the yard. Oh it was downright wonderful. Everything is green, the sun was shining so bright it hurt my eyes and for the first time in days the wind has stopped blowing for real. Splendid! I mean it, I could have stayed down there permanently, picking peppers, tomatoes and whatnot, but alas after weeding through the patches, yanking out massive plants that had no business being there, everything that had to be done was done.

Instead we went to the greenhouse to plant some small lettuce plants in pots. We’re going to see how it works, because we really want to have fresh veggies this winter as well, so this is the experiment. While we were busy there anyway, we also brought the young eucalypti that we’d been nursing to the rest of the young trees so they can become strong for when we start putting them in the ground. The plan is to fill the slope over the old bus, which will create more privacy and if necessary wood, in the future.

The dogs were, of course, ecstatic heading out into the yard. In fact while I was trying to get into the veggie garden with only my better trained, Mosha, Knight II, Dax and Sitabah, Touri and Chaos barged right through too. Seriously, you have no idea how fast a Basset can be if he wants to, but I tried to catch him, and couldn’t. Normally you can’t get him to move faster than a snail’s pace, and yet when he wants something he can go from zero to fifty in a New York second…big gorgeous bastard…and he knows his worth too, of course, moseying through the plants as if there was no tomorrow. He almost killed an eggplant plant before I finally managed to catch him, in fact.

Okay, writing wise it was a slow day yesterday, (just the editing, remember) but, considering I only need to wrap up a few more scenes and check for fact, things are really going along nicely in that area. I’m thinking that by the end of the month we’ll have the story done and can start sending it out. I also started on the synopsis, so, yeah. Okay. Don’t know what else to write about, so I’m going to leave it at this. Time for me to have something eat (skipped breakfast as usual…who has the time for stuff like that anyway) and then continue on with tenant’s solarium. It’s looking good. :-)

Almost! Almost!

Song of the day: “A prayer for everyone” by Belinda Carlisle. An oldie that I didn’t discover until last year, I think, but a good one for sure.

So I’m way behind again, and considering I cut my outside work day short to get going on my blog I gotta hurry through it so I can start proper on finishing the book. Almost there. I’ve got six more pages to fill.

Last night I finished the epilogue and I was appropriately soppy from it. I don’t know, but always when I write down the inevitable ending of a book I cry like a little girl. I blame Romancing the Stone, really. I saw that movie before I actually started writing and for some reason my body is convinced that crying at the end of a book project is the appropriate thing to do. So I did, and big brother looked at me as if I was bonkers, just like he always does. I guess we’ve got our own little ritual all worked out. Hah.

The ending is charming, by the way. Totally corny but what the hey, it’s romance and when you write romance a bit of corny is an absolute requisite. Hah. I’ll be needing to wrap up a couple more scenes, maybe ad a short one here and there, but then, then…then there’s the edit and after that I get to start proper on a new book, yay! I can hardly wait. I need a new book. Something violent, something thrilling, ‘cause all this sweetness I’ve been writing for the past few months is rotting my teeth away. *chortle*

But besides the almost-finished-now-book, life has been going on as usual. Yesterday morning we were up early to head for Marbella to pick up our friend. The trip was really uneventful, so I’m not going to bother you with that. We went there and came back again to start on some actual work.

While big brother continued with the Land Rover’s imperial (I always see National Lampoon’s grandma on the imperial when I mention this. I don’t know why) grandpa and I continued with the solarium for tenant’s bungalow. We got the main glass wall in today, and it looks bloody gorgeous…even though it kinda reminds me of the lion cages in the local zoo where they used glass instead of bars. Hah. It’s solid, big and will certainly be an excellent spot for tenant to spent most of the winter.

Considering we were doing a lot of work by the carport, I did talk tenant into joining us so she could sit in the sun (out of the horrible wind. Poor doggies are hating it, FYI) and she walked all the way down, and at the end of the day back up, so, yay. She went up my porch too, and had such better balance than last year, so she really is doing much better, no matter that she sometimes feels that she isn’t.

But anyway, we worked on the solarium, both yesterday and today, and it’s looking good. One more wall to go and then we can break out the old, creating light and room in the bungalow. Tenant for one is thrilled, so’s her caregiver who will certainly enjoy the extra space. I do like the fact that now tenant will be able to look outside rather than a blank wall in her room this winter.

What with the cold winds and the incredibly unusual coolness for this time of year, winter appears to have commenced way too early. Poor dogs, who insist on trailing us everywhere no matter that they would benefit from staying inside. I'm already wearing four layers again, darn it, and the poor darlings won't lie down unless there's something to lie on.

The imperial is also looking good so far. The main frame is put together now and we put it on top of the car to see the effect and it’s excellent. I can almost see the end result. We’ll have to paint it after big brother finishes putting the “sleds” on but soon we’ll be able to transport stuff on top. Yay.

Other than that there is just the usual chores, and of course yesterday afternoon spent in the yard watering the plants and harvesting a full crate of veggies. Got 10 friggin’ pumpkins, eight of which came from the wild plant that we hardly watered at all and that grew in the corner of the yard all by itself. They’re tasty to boot, so that’s some plant for sure. Also got out beets, onions, peppers and tomatoes. Heck, we even found two more zucchinis, so there is more than enough fresh food to go ‘round.

While we were watering I took out my notebook and pen, and worked on this book review thing I’m doing, because I don’t want to forget and do a sloppy job of it, and I wrote some ideas down for a new book that has been playing through my head for the past week or so. I’m afraid that as soon as this book is finished, the new one is going to require a vast amount of attention. Seriously, there are tentative forays of characters that are just demanding to be written about.

Well, that will be all for today. I’ve got that book to finish for real and, well, this is more than enough for a single blog. Hah.

Sucks.

Song of the day: “Broken strings” by James Morrison and Nelly Furtado. Didn’t discover this song until last year, and I’ve gotta say that it surprised me. I don’t generally like Morrison, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Ah, another workday past and we did it in such a way that we didn’t need to go out again this morning. Luckily for us, John Doe (main distributor, remember?) was once again early, so we managed to do the village at the end of the evening and be done with the whole thing.

A bit of bad news first. Yesterday morning started out with a trip to the vet’s together with tenant. It was time to have her little dog, Hummel put down, and it was a rather emotional morning for all of us (her, of course, her caregiver and me).
Fourteen-year-old Hummel had cancer in all her mammal glands, had cataract in both eyes, was deaf, and as of last week developed a very bad ear infection. She was often gazing into nothing, cried in her sleep and couldn’t hold her bladder anymore. And thus, it once again points out why life can totally suck. *sigh*

Regretfully Hummel was a rescue dog, and since tenant really couldn’t stay in the room while the necessary had to be done, I helped her out into the waiting area to then return to little Hummel who’s had traumas from the day we brought her home as a present for tenant. Poor dog never did get over being touched, and though over the years she had mellowed enough to enjoy frequent pettings, during the past few months she had gotten worse again. Today was no different. In the end the overdose anesthetic did her in and she became quiet in my arms.

All three of us, sobbed like little girls, no matter how often we have gone through this particular ordeal before. It just sucks, there is no other way to describe it.

Let’s change the subject because this is making me depressed. It was a work day, so is more to tell.

First of all, I went past that restaurant/cocktail lounge I mentioned last week, and talked to the owner to see if she would agree to let me work there for a day, so I would be able to write about it.
I’ve got to admit that the idea is starting to appeal to me. I think I’m going to be brutally honest with the whole blog/column thing and explain that after fifteen years of being buried inside my books, it would be fascinating to discover if the jobs I’ve described in my stories, are even remotely true.

Worst-case scenario I’ll have something incredibly embarrassing to tell, best-case scenario, I’ll have interesting topics to talk about. We’ll just gonna have to wait and see how it works out, but so far I’ve made some tentative ventures as to places where to do it. There will be a really English Fish and Chips place, which I always pass on my paper route. The cocktail lounge/restaurant, and perhaps even a gym. It’ll be a fun experience to write about, I’m thinking.

But let’s not get ahead of things, first I’ve got all the arrangements to see to, then find a nice way to talk about it, and then…heck, then I might even open an entirely different page on blogger for it. Hah.

Be that as it may, let’s get back to the present. I went past the Indian restaurant again to talk with the owner about advertising, but he didn’t like the rather generous offer John Doe had made. So now we’ll go back to the me being distributor and him being a drop spot, and I am rather happy with that. They’re a rather intense lot over there, and stuff would just get more difficult in the end.

The route went fine, no hiccups this time, not even a flat tire, like last week, hah. I had a few nice chats, even with the waiter from the Indian restaurant, so we’ll just continue to chat when I come past. I also thanked the lady who suggested her daughter’s cocktail lounge, and she then informed me that her boss was likely to agree as well.

The weather wasn’t as pleasant as it could have been, but we had a bit miserly rain only in the end. There were massive clouds rumbling in from the west, though, and they looked mightily impressive, I’ve got to admit. Big piling clouds of a variety of slate gray and black, rolling in on this chilly, and fierce wind coming from the ocean. Both yesterday and today (it persisted) felt a little bit like some sort of fantasy movie/book, where the forces of evil come roaring closer, sweeping everything in its path. Of course the last part didn’t happen, but from the looks of things, it could have. Hah.

So anyways, we finished our official route around eleven thirty and then headed for the village for the last part. Afterwards I was seriously tired and dove into bed with my doggies, who were more than eager to share their warmth with me. Seriously, heat-wise a heating pad doesn’t compete with a 120 pounds Great Dane with more heat than you can imagine. I was toasty within less than half an hour. The darlings were so happy to see me, even Labhana wanted on the bed. She never does, but for about half an hour she just snuggled close and looked blissful while I held her close. Same goes for Chaos, by the way. He toddled his way to the head end of the way and flopped down to strike a supposedly attractive pose.

Today…well, I woke from a dream where I was babysitting the kids of Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni (yeah, I know, Family Man. It’s been years since I saw the movie, and yet there they were as if I had seen it last night, or something). Rather weird dream.

The morning was spent taking our frozen veggies (you know, the ones we froze during the harvest season this summer) up to tenant’s so I could make ratatouille for our brunch.
While big brother stared on welding our planned imperial for the Land Rover, Grandpa and I started on planning and putting together tenant’s future solarium.

We gathered the wood that would be necessary, measured the glass we saved for this particular project, and started sawing. We’ve got the main frame all together and started on clean-up around six. Everything that could be done before tomorrow got done, and the rest, well, we’ll see if we can get to it ‘round tomorrow after we pick up our friend in Marbella.
That means we only need to go out three times this week because…oh, did I mention it already? Friday is the dreaded grocery shopping day. Seriously, where does the time go? I mean it, it’s not funny. The last time was already three weeks ago (come Friday) and yet, if I asked, I would swear a week and a half at most. I HATE grocery shopping day. *sigh*

No matter though, what has to be done gets done in the end.
Well, I for one am looking forward to writing now. I’ve got a book to finish and am glad for it.

Building with rocks again. Yay!

Song of the day: “A little time” by The Beautiful South. Had it before, will probably have it again. Hah.

Yep, still eating pumpkin soup and it is only getting better with age. Hah. Gawd, without exaggeration I just kept eating. Seriously, dipping French bread into the stuff and then just stuffing yourself is absolutely divine.

This very morning and afternoon, we were down by the greenhouse and resumed building the rock wall on the outside of the basin. Got it all one layer high now, and the first step of what will soon be the stairs. It is going to be gorgeous, I tell ya. Also strong, since the stairs will be the support of the center of the wall. There really is nothing like working with cement and natural rock. I love it, and by the time it’s done it’ll look like an old castle wall or something.

In the morning (yesterday, I know I’m mixing up my days but I’m a tad disorganized these days) I took a few minutes to fix the zipper on one of my pants…meaning I sowed it together. Hah. I had been postponing it for weeks, but now I at least have something else to wear than my grays.

Afterwards I painted the greenhouse eave, so big brother could put them up. Since I was paint splattered anyway, I also got the blue paint out and did the top windows of the greenhouse, meaning that we have basically finished the greenhouse (big brother put in the last panes of glass yesterday as well) for real this time. Yay.

There was of course some more harvesting, and watering of the plants, which is really rather nice. The sun was still out, and down there the temperatures are much nice since it is protected against the wind.

Friday night was spent doing some more kick boxin, yay. It was wonderful, as usual, even though I did less due to a shortage of time. *sigh*
I did finally make myself print a book I promised to review and started reading. Yay. I hate doing it on my computer and now that I’m about five chapters into the story, I’ve got to say it is interesting to see how it is done.

A bit of bad news is that tenant’s old dog Hummel is really at her end, health-wise. The pour thing is over fourteen and she really doesn’t like it anymore, so tenant had to make the difficult decision to have her put down tomorrow. I’m going to drive her there, and though I offered to do it for her, she feels that she should be with the dog herself. Very true. I always feel that even though it would be so much easier not to be there when a beloved four-legged friend meets his/her end, I owe it to that dog to be there in the last minute. Having been a loyal companion for many years the dog deserves to have it’s boss right there to the very end at least.

Over the past two days I managed to jot down six pages for the latest manuscript, meaning that I really should hurry along wrapping things up, because I am about 5000 words away from the maximum amount of words, darn it.

This week past way too fast, by the way. Gawd, it just flew. Can you believe that I am only a day away from the job again…and added to that I’m going past that cocktail lounge/restaurant to ask if she would be interested in having me work there for a day so I can describe it in both my blog and perhaps even a column…if I can talk them into it, that is. Hah.

Worked on the console box for the Land Rover yesterday as well, but since it was already twilight, we stopped before we could get a lot done and headed inside to work on the book again.

A bit of good new, I finally made a decision regarding “Saving Nina” and asked some friends from Amazon.com if they want to beta read the story. I had to face the fact that even though we could of course do another edit, it really would have no use because we would just end up changing things, rather than make the story better.
Maybe these readers will be able to figure out what it was, exactly, that caused the editor to say no.
We’ll see.

What else? Well, that about sums it up, I guess. The dogs are happy following us around, and therefore happy period, considering we do a lot of it. Hah. I should be doing some cleaning in my cabin, but what the heck, who’s got time for such frivolous things as cleaning. Hah.
